Sunday 19 April 2009

National Junior League

A day of success and promise for the coming season was had by Cambridge Harriers young athletes in the opening fixture of the season in the National Junior League.

In the junior men, stand out winning performances came from the very exuberant Craig Lacy in the Javelin (54.64m), Hammer (32.90m), he also got two creditable third in the Discus (34.57m) and Shot (12.05m).

Andrew Sheridan also started the season in fine fettle as he completed a winning double in the 800m (1:58.5) and 2000m S/C in 6:13.4

A couple of under 17 debutants were pushed into taking part in the actual scoring programme due to some absentees and gain valuable points as well as experience – Nigel Munjoma came second in both the high jump (1.75m) and triple jump (11.09m) he also long jump (5.82m) but had to forfeit his points as he arrived a tad late.

The junior women team was dominated by u17s, 6 of the nine athletes that took part were in this category and 4 of the 5 victories were also gain by this age group. Anesa Wanogho – hammer (26.94m), Cloe Garret with a winning dip in the 400H (71.8s), Chanel Hemmings 100m (13.1s) and Melissa Owusu-Ansah 200m (26.9) only Holly Ware with a pb in the ‘b’ hammer (22.44m) was the exception.

The team on the day finished 3rd, nearly a hundred points behind the winner & host Tonbridge, Medway & Maidstone were runner up.

With three matches still to go and the prospect of some useful athletes still to come back from injuries and holiday we will be looking to finish a lot closer next time.

Officials required - track and field season

In recent years the number of athletes competing in the BMC/Cambridge Harriers Open meets has continued to increase and last year, we had the highest attendance seen to date.

In order to improve the quality of the meet we need more volunteers to perform the various jobs needed on the night. They include officiating on the track and the field, starter’s assistant, timekeeping, running results, and other backroom duties such as taking entries etc.

For those who may be interested in helping further, there are league matches at home and also away in which we have to supply volunteers. Click here for fixtures.

Such skills can be practiced while helping the club.

It will be useful if we know your intention to attend in advance so we can plan the duties.

Please call Barry Ferguson on 020-8699 1261or email at barrington@barryferg.plus.com.
