Butcher hits form for England
England V Ireland international match
Heather Butcher was very excited to be selected for the England Race Walking Team for the annaul match against Ireland for the Nihill Shield at Tullamore (IRL).
Racing with two more experienced walkers in the girls 12-14 category over 2000 metres, they gave the team a perfect with 1,2, 3 finish with the three of them being seperated by just eleven seconds.
Heather closed to within two seconds of her main rival in the U13's Rebecca Chambers (City of Sheffield) reducing her personal best (and the club record) by 11 seconds recording a time of 11:01.13.
The England team retained the Nihill Shield for another year by one point.
British Men's League
Another intrepid band of Harriers headed north to Leeds for the third British League fixture of the season, writes Mick Bond.
Despite some valiant efforts including Omari's forward roll between hurdles 3 and 4 in the 400 hurdles, Craig's willingness to have a go at the Pole Vault and Andre's attempt to Triple Jump from the 11m board it was not to be on the team front and despite some early rays of hope we finished last again and Division 3 beckons next year.
There was however good team spirit and whatever happens we will continue to fight for our place in the top ranks of British Athletics.
Highlights (apart form those listed above) included a double first for David Bolarinwa in the 100 and 200m in 10.70 and 21.57 and an excellent Steeplechase from Dean lacy in 9.11.57 which puts him close to the UK tope 20.
Final match at Linford Christie Stadium on Saturday August 21st
BMC - Cambridge Harriers Open
Charlie Grice of Phoenix AC ran a fantastic race and time in the A BMC 800m at Sutcliffe Park.
An under 17, he ran 1:50.61 to knock five secondsoff his previous best. He is now second in the all time BMC rankings for an under 17, missing Michael Rimmers time by 4 100ths and fifth in the UK all time u17 rankings.
This performance also puts him at the top of the U17 rankings this year and
ranks him 11th in the world this year for the age group.
Inter Counties U13
U13 Ben Stanbury won silver in the high jump in the Inter Counties u13 competition last Saturday. The winner recorded the same height but ben must have lost out on countback.
Snowdon Fell Race, Saturday 24th July 2010, Llanberis, Wales.
10 miles and 3300 feet ascent.
Pat Austin and Mark Newell made their second trip to Wales in 8 days to compete in the International Snowdon Race. The course follows a 1 mile undulating tarmac road before hitting the mountain tourist path which is followed for the next 4 miles to the cairn at the top of the mountain. Once this is reached its a fast descent back down to the finish. The record for the 5 mile descent is an amazing 21 minutes and 5 seconds.
The weather on the day was wet and overcast and as height was gained the rain got heavier and the wind got stronger making for unpleasant running conditions.
Mark was first Cambridge Harriers to the top in a time of 74 minutes and 34 seconds. Pat's time to reach the top was 77 minutes and 38 seconds.
Pat had a much quicker descent than Mark, partly down to a better choice of footwear, and passed him just before the road section was reached. Pat finished in 334th position with a time of 1 hour 55 minutes and 21 seconds compared to Marks 341st place in a time of 1 hour 55 minutes and 28 seconds.
