Borrowdale Fell
Five Cambridge Harriers made the annual trip to Cumbria for the annual Borrowdale Fell Race. Chris Rogers share with us his thoughts on the weekend.
"What a race !! I now realise I need to train harder for next year...! It was the first time I truly expereinced a 'bonk'; I ran pretty well to the summit of Scafell Pike but began to feel sick on the ascent of Great Gable, slowing me down dramatically for the stretch to Honister Pass.
By the time I got there, I was within 25 mins of the cut-off and seriously considered retiring due to the way I felt... Thankfully, and in spite of the tank being completely empty, and probably due to the flapjack given to me by fellow Cambridge Harrier Pat Austin (who couldn't race due injury,) somewhere deep within me the fighting spirit pushed me very slowly up Dale Head and helped me hobble down the other side to the finish line.
If I looked anything like I felt when I crossed the finish line, i was probably sheet white and wobbly. I was very pleased to finish, even if somewhat slower than expected, and know that my nav was fine, just need to do more long in-terrain training runds for next year. Well done to all finishers, a big thanks to the organisers and especially the marshals on those claggy & cold summits. Commiserations to those who retired or got cut off, including 2 of my fellow club runners - one of whom went a bit wrong and ended up on Kirk Fell ! Back next year.
Mark Newell & Peter Hadley retired at Great Gable as the cut-off time at Honister was looking unlikely - bad luck guys (actually I think Peter rather enjoyed his extra-curricular afternoon walk up Kirk Fell ).
I have to say thanks to you guys for helping me prepare for this very tough race (toughest yet for me, harder than a marathon in my opinion,) and thanks to Pat for driving Mark and I there and back, letting me share your tent (as I 'forgot' to bring one,) and for the friendly face and flapjack at Honister - much needed ! Well done to all who attempted this hard, hard race."

Retired - Mark Newell & Peter Hadley
British Coastal Relay
Several Cambridge Harriers made history today, by carrying Barry the Baton in to Kent on his journey around the coast of mainland Britian.
Highly influenced by comedian Eddie Izzard’s fantastic feat of 43 marathons in 52 days and one man’s innate desire to do something a bit different, a group called Coasters GB are pledging to run around the country with a baton, christened Barry.
The group are mainly Runners World forumites, an online community of runners, and now 13 weeks into the journey, which started in Blackpool on 9th May, they have now completed 2480 miles along the coast line of Britian.
Arriving at the Greenwich foot tunnel on Sunday morning, 11 Cambridge Harriers and four other local runners took Barry on the journey to Erith in the first time this epic relay has ever been attempted.
Harrier Stephanie Dungate said "This is so exciting to be part of something big and unique."
The first day in Kent will see Barry and his team of carriers, or Coasters, follow the Thames from the to Gravesend, where he will venture inland a little before joining the Saxon Shore Way in Gravesend to make the journey further along the river and up the Medway to Rochester. Barry will then take a well-deserved rest overnight before continuing on his journey along the North Kent coast to his next overnight destination of Seasalter.
