Lacy'sLucky Shoes!
Dean Lacy comfortably retained his Senior Men 5 mile Cross-country title on Saturday in Joydens Wood, despite wearing borrowed footwear for the second consecutive weekend. With the course muddier than normal, Dean was persuaded to rely again on the firm footing provided by a pair of fell shoes, one size too big, that were kindly led to him by Paul Kent. Last week they enabled him to run the fastest time at the Reigate Relays. This Saturday he started more conservatively and was part of the chasing group at the end of the small lap behind early leader Matt Winn-Smith.
Those lucky fell shoes came to the assistance of Dean again early on the first large lap as he was forced to stop to tie up a pair of loose laces. With the other race leaders briefly going off-course, he was able to resume without losing his place and from then on, assumed his expected dominant position at the front.
By the end of the race he was more than a minute ahead of the guest runner Mark Wilkins who in turn was closely followed in by the silver medallist Dave Reader. The third club runner home and 5th overall was Mark Penny to repeat his bronze medal placing of last year.

With Dean Lacy competing at the Inter-Counties and so unable to defend his title, Rob Jackaman was a comfortable winner of the Championship. The Joydens Wood course was less muddy than it was for the 7 and ½ mile race at Christmas and the weather certainly warmer but the 4 and a half laps were still a tough challenge for a smaller field than usual. Rob led all the way and finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of the field. A strong final lap by Mark Penny took him past Clem Dixon and into silver position.
Rob and Mark will again race against each other on Wednesday when they both take part in the Police Cross-Country Championships in Cumbria.
The first guest runner home, John Wilkins, made a welcome return visit to his former club. Still running impressively well, John was the winner of this race back in 1975!
