Cardington Cracker Fell Race - 9 miles / Ascent 2,600 feet
With the torrential downpour of the previous few days the going for this years race was soft to boggy with associated cold and high winds.
Despite that, all the runners made it safely round with only a few spills on the slick grass, rocks and mud. This was Chris Rogers first Fell race with the club and he ran a very creditable time of 1hr 49mins.
Paul Kent had a good climb, but thinking of his ankles decended like a "prancing ballerina".
Ian Marshall and Dave Tull turned in their usual solid performances and finished 5th and 6th respectively in their age group. Mark Newell and Pat "the Boy" Austin ran a conservative race together, with Pat just avoiding Mark's "helping hands" to just get ahead of him at the finish. The runners were well supported by Allison Marshall and Graham Decourcy, who climbed to the top of the second Fell to cheer the runners through.
The times were:
59th Paul Kent 1:35:51 (13th - V45)
129th Chris Rogers 1:49:29 (30th - V40)
155th Ian Marshall 1:53:22 (5th - V60)
164th Dave Tull 1:55:57 (6th - V60)
208th Pat Austin 2:08:29 (38th - V40)
209th Mark Newell 2:08:31 (28th - V50)
This week in history...
A new feature where we look at club news from years gone by.
Dificulty finding new blood
1901- Ben Chase, eventually club President for 50 years, writes for the Cambridge Harriers Gazette on the difficulty clubs were facing recruiting new athletes to cross-country. 108 years later, his comments still ring true:
"The only reason to account this apethy (in cross-country) to the once monst predominant form of athletics is the great interest taken in football."
Chase concludes, "..another important feature in connection with our sport is that one always has a chance to win prizes and have something to show for one's prowess. With football, bruses and broken bones are generally the net result."
