Youngsters in indoor medal haul

L-R: Joe Berth Jones, Melissa Owusu Ansah & Charlie Perry

Kent Indoor Championships

Thirteen club members competed in the Kent Indoor Championships over the weekend but not as many as could have entered writes Mick Bond! The standards of these meeting is good but nothing that club members should be afraid of and this is a good introduction to championship running, jumping and throwing – Coaches and Athletes please take note the outdoor version will be in May with a closing date for forms in mid April (See the Kent AA web site)

Gabriella Ade Onojobi contributed most to the medal haul with golds in the Under 20 60, 200 and 400 plus a silver in the 60m hurdles. In the 200 she had an easy ride but in the 400 she was in 5th after the first lap. A storming run down the back straight pulled her back to 2nd and then she overhauled the leader in the home straight to win in a time of 60. In the 60 flats she was very please to beat the girl who denied her her fourth gold in the Hurdles !

Melissa Owusu Ansah added Gold and bronze in the Under 17 300 and 200m respectfully . In the 300 she had a great win running from the outside lane she led the field from the start and recorded a big pb of 40.77 a time which will put her in the top three in the country. Also bringing home gold in the under 17 girls event was Caroline Ford, who performed well to run 2:22.30 to win in the 800m.

Charlie Perry won gold in the Under 17 boys the hard way, 5th after the break he was forced to run in lane three for the next two bends as he tried and then eventually succeeded to overtake the rest of the field. In the 60m Hurdles he took silver and we look forward to the summer when he combined the two disciplines in the 400m Hurdles

Ruth Onyekwe competed in the Under 17 girls 60m and qualified for the final with a time of 8.22 just outside her pb but in the final she raised her game further to set a great new pb of 8.04 and take the bronze medal

Joe Berth Jones also ran in the 60m and set a new pb 7.24 and then followed this up with another pb of 23.43 to win the 200m

Nigel Munjoma added a silver to the club’s medal haul with a leap of 6.17 in the Under 20 Long Jump.

London & Kent Schools Cross Country Championships

Several young Cambridge Harriers represented their school in the London Schools Cross Country Championship at Parliament Hill last Wednesday and in the Kent equivalent at Wilmington on Saturday.

The highlight of the day came in the Junior girls race where Grace De Rome, Sophie Parkes and Natasha Coe-Sinha battled the mud to gain first , second and third respectively. Their positions helped the JAGS team to first place. In the same race, Georgia Renny came 16th, Omilade Taiwo gained 21st place, Olivia Kristensen 35th and Sophia Denby 71st.

Kassia Soards had a very good day in the Inter girls race, continuing to improve, finishing 13th among the field of 57 runners.

Rob and Alisdair McDonald achieved second and seventh place in the Senior Boys race while Ryan Full-James competed for 17th place in the Inter boys.

New comer Juvenial Iragaba ran very well to claim 12th place in the Junior boys race to help Woolwich Poly to fourth place among 26 teams. Donomar Smith came 28th in the Inter boys race.

In Wilmington on Saturday, Stephen Ball produced the best performance of the day from a Cambridge Harrier, to finish 38th from 107 runners in the Kent Junior boys race. Joe Wood finished 21st from 61 in the Inter Boys while Jo Simmons gained 11th spot from 19 in trhe Senior boys race.

In the Junior girls race, Iona Williams gained 33rd and Lucy Daniel 57th from 86 finishers while Megan Williams gained 26th place in the Inter girls race.

Long Mynd Valley Fell races

This year’s Long Mynd Valleys Fell Race was less well attended by Cambridge Harriers than in previous years – in fact, just Mark Newell and Chris Rogers were there to give a light blue presence.

A spate of injuries amongst the club’s other Fell regulars affected the turnout, with Ian Marshall having broken his collar bone in the Box Hill race 2 weeks ago, Dave Tull having injured his calf muscle. However, Ian and Alison Marshall made the trip for the whole weekend for a spot of walking and were on the spot to encourage Mark and Chris, as well as capture some of their efforts on video.

Conditions were cold & foggy for the start of this tough race, and stayed that way for the first third of the route up the initial 2 climbs and across the seemingly never-ending plateau. In the second half of the race, where it is said the race really starts, conditions improved, to give good visibility of the incredibly steep ascents & descents encountered.

Chris managed to keep his legs moving, spurred on by the thought of a cup of tea to finish in 137th place in 2:36:11, while Mark, who was still recovering from his injured calf over Xmas treated the race as a training run and finished in 184th place in 3:11:23.

It was then a further hour and a half before the dreamt of cup of tea materialised, but this was instrumental in helping to banish any thoughts of how tough the race was, and gave an opportunity to have a look at the race calendar to decide on the next race.

(Long Mynd Valleys Fell Race: rated ‘A’ Medium, 11.5 miles / 4,500 feet ascent)

Great Bentley Half Marathon
