Durrant makes up for bizarre 800!
Joe Durrant set another pb in the 1500at the weekend in Belfast in the BMC grand prix.

Running in the A race he ran a steady and well paced run to record a time of
3m 45.71. ironically he went through the 800 in the same time he ran in last weeks AAAs championships!

Hopefully this form can be used to good effect in the coming British league fixture at Leeds.

Pen Y Fan and Fan Y Big Fell races
Mark Newell reports on the latest away days from the fell running section of the club.

Sat 17th July, Pen Y Fan fell race, 3.5 miles, 1 930 feet ascent.

The first of two races over the weekend involved a steep climb to the highest point in the Brecon Beacons.

This was followed by a steep grassy descent from the top of the peak before regaining the outward path back to the finish.

First to the top was Mark Newell followed by Ian Marshall some 30 seconds later.
Ian coped better with the descent and near the bottom of the steep section was able to open up a gap on Mark.

As the path levelled out Mark was in hot pursuit of Ian and closing the gap - this was until he took a tumble in order to prevent himself from running into a barbed wire fence.

Ian was eventually the first Cambridge harrier to cross the line in a quicker time than he recorded last year.

Mark was next to finish for the club and he was followed home 45 seconds later by Pat Austin who smashed his pb for the course.
Dave Tull has been recently returning from a long standing calf problem and was pleased to have been able to start the race and finish without any set backs to the injury.
48th Ian Marshall 54:58
56th Mark Newell 56:15
57th Pat Austin 56:48
62nd Dave Tull 68:59

Brecon Beacons, Fan Y Big horseshoe, 10 miles, 2 200 feet ascent.

Three sets of tired and stiff legs competed in the second of the two weekend fell races on the sunday, the Fan Y Big horseshoe.

Dave Tull, returning from injury, opted to walk the course rather than run.
The weather in the valley was warm and sunny at the start of the race but towards the summit and all the way around the ridge on the top of the mountain the runners were greated with wet and windy weather.

The first 2 miles of the course were flat and through farmers fields.

Once the foot of the mountain had been reached the 2 200 feet of climb was tackled over the next two or three miles before running around a curved ridge for a further 2 miles. This was then followed by a long and gradual descent along a grassy ridge before hitting the valley and running the final mile on tarmac road to the finish.
Ian Marshal completed the course in just under two hours, making up for last year when he went off course and was not given a finish time.

Mark Newell and Pat Austin were treating the race as a training run and in the process saving a bit of energy for next weekends Snowdon mountain fell race. Despite taking it relatively easy they were still pleased to have run 5 minutes quicker than last year.

Southern Counties Veterans League

A small mens team traveled to Bromley on a sweltering Friday night for the last league meeting. With only nine athletes we managed to cover all the events.

We needed to beat Dartford by 4.5 points to overtake them and finish third overall and managed to win four events.

Consistent throwers Tony Tipping and Peter Wishart won the M35 and M50 discus. Mark Ashby won the M35 B 800m.

The team finished on a high winning the medley relay. Andy Knight took over the last leg in third pace, at least 25m behind the lead, he patiently worked his way to the lead by the last 100m.

Mark Cross managed a fine second place in the M50 800m after competing in the M50 long jump.

The team had their best performance of the season, coming second. Unfortunately just one point ahead of Dartford, the team were 4th overall. Thanks to all those who competed this year, heres to an injury free 2011.
