Sunday Summary 14 June 2009
Harriers miss out on debut BAL win/success in the park
7 June 2009
County Schools Championship / Kent Championship
Many of the club’s youngsters were competing for their Borough’s at Saturdays County Schools Champs.
In a sunny Battersea Park Cloe Garratt won both the Under 17 80 and 300 hurdles, the later in a pb of 47.0.
David Bolarinwa won the Under 17 boys100 meters frustratingly running 10.9 in both the heats and finals – 10.8 has got to come soon.
Anesa Wanogho, returning after a break for exams, won the Under 17 girls Shot Putt and was only 15 cm off her pb with a putt of 11.78m whilst Melissa Owusu Ansah blew the opposition away with a great 41.6 in the Under 17 300m to put her in the running for selection for the English Schools Championships in Sheffield. Charlie Perry did similarly in the 400 Hurdles smashing his pb for about the 5th time this season with a 58.1 second run to win the event.
The overall standard at the London championships was very high and no more so in the Under 17 boys 400meters where Omari Markland Montgomery and Donomar Smith both broke their pb’s with times of 50.5 and 50.6 and yet could only finish second and third – both should make the team for Sheffield.
Daryl Neita broke two pb’s running the Under 15 girls in 100 in 12.8 and then Long Jumping 4.83 , Erife Williams won the Junior boys sprint hurdles in 12.5 and Max Collett was the clear winner of the Under 15 1500 in 4.25.0
At the Kent Championships at Ashford Gabriella Ade Onojobi improved her club record again in under 17 300 Hurdles winning in 44.1. Joe Berth Jones won the under 15 boys 100m and should join Gabriella in the Kent team for Sheffield
National Junior League
With the official results still to be published, it looks as if Cambridge Harriers Junior Team may have won a match since the introduction of joint scoring in 2006.
Unofficial results shows that Cambridge won the 3rd meeting of the Medway division by 10 points. More will follow shortly.
SCVAC League & SCVAC champs
It's been a busy weekend for the veterans in the SCVAC with a Friday Fixture and Championships.
Tony Tipping followed up last week’s impressive multi throwing event programme at Abingdon for the Senior Men in the British League, with a dominant display in the Southern Counties Veterans Championships at Kingston today.
He cleaned up by winning the discus (36.87), the hammer (38.72) and the javelin where in this event he set a veterans personal best of 39.54 metres. Yet in many respects his greatest satisfaction must have come in the shot putt where he threw a ‘lifetime best’ of 12.12 to secure a splendid second place in that event.
Tony is due to return to British League action for the Seniors on 4th July at Bournemouth after which his busy schedule then takes him to Birmingham the following day to take part in the British Masters Championships.
North Downs 30km
Four intrepid Cambridge Harriers took to the hills in the North Downs 30km on Sunday.
A challenging course was made even more testing with the sun baring down fearcely on the runners.
76th Brinsley Gunning was the first Harrier to finish, 76th place in 2:43:25, followed by Ian Marshall (157th, 2:58:27), Mark Newell (231st, 3h 10:39) and Les Pullen, 349th, 3:39:23
With Helen Garrett and Simone Laidlow being welcomed into the team for the SCVAC League on Friday, it was like an `older girlies' reunion.
Team spirit was as usual on form with athletes putting aside their own injuries to come and support. Ann Brenchly dropped down an age group to run in the W50's 800m, it was a fast race from the start and over a distance she isn't used to running, a respectable 4th place puts Ann at the top of the Cambridge Harriers W60's ranking list.
Abi, Joanne and Maria set the trend for the meeting in the 100m whilst Caroline Hall led the way in the 100m to finish first.
Ola took 2nd in the 800m with `B' string Simone Laidlow blowing away many years of cobwebs despite a recent injury. We made other clubs envious by putting a non scorer into the 800m with Helen Garrett extending her long jump runway to include two laps of the track!
She ran a very good 800m which we are still trying to get the official time for (est. 2.40). Two firsts, seven second and our lowest being 4th place put Cambridge Harriers in a good position at the end of the match, overall position wasn't confirmed until we got the full results - Cambridge Harriers vet ladies have won two out of the three matches.
At this stage we should put a hold on the first weekend in September, as the finials are normally ran on the Saturday or Sunday.
SheRunsHeRuns 10k
Several Cambridge Harriers were at Bluewater on Sunday morning, not for shopping, but running in the annual and popular SheRuns HeRuns 10km.
Mark Penny was the first to finish. His time of 36:09 gained him 14th position from the 2100 finishers.
Martin Hawkins wasnext to finish the all road course in, 41:19, followed by training partner Paul Cullern in 43:41.
On a beautiful morning for running, before temperatures rose too much, Monica Whitefield was the first Harriers lady to finish in 47:44, followed up by Sandra Gaster, 51:33.
Other Cambridge Harriers in the event were Steve Perfect 57:12; Jane Phelpes 57:43; Tony Newton 59:09; Emma McCabe 1:06:32 and Gerald Reeves, 1:16:55.
Martin Hawkins: Running, not shopping, at Bluewater
National Junior League – Ashford 14 June 2009 – Match 3
What a difference having a nearly full squad make – my last report lamented the lack of bodies was costing the club dear. All but eleven (11) events were covered this time compared to 30 (Match 2) and astonishingly 32 (a home fixture). That’s the bad news now on to the really good bits. The weather was dry, hot with intermittent clouds and history was in the making.
Cloe Garrett started the ball rolling in the pole vault with 2.20m to gain 2nd place while Anesa Wanogho was equalling her pb coming 2nd in the shot (11.78m) which she set the day before at the Kent Schools, she was joined by returnee
Carol Stone (she had a brief stint with Shaftesbury Barnet) who also came 2nd ‘b’ shot .
Junior men first events were of difference contrast as Craig Lacy was 3rd in Hammer 34.48m and Denis Hasanaj grabbed 1st with 21.86 for ‘b’ string – the Long jump saw Nigel Munjoma and Ben Reid failed to get over 4m and both
came last. To be fair to Nigel he was complaining of sore shins and made amends as he picked up valuable pts along with Arthur Tanoh in the high jump (1.60 & 1.55 resp.)
Holly Ware and Anesa combined to give the oppositions another hammering in the hammer – no pts have been dropped by the women in this event so far this season.
The first track event saw Gabriella Ade-Onojobi easily win the 400h (65.5) Charlie Perry and Tobi Odusanya were 2nd & 3rd respectively in their event (62.4 & 68.7). David Bolarinwa tasted a rare defeat in the 100m as he pitted his speedagainst older rivals, the winner recorded 10.9 (the same time that David recorded twice the day before at London Schools) David was 2nd with 11.0. Maleka Allen who has recently joined the club had a very fast 100m (12.7) and was 2nd in her ‘b’ race.
Back out in the field, Craig Lacy teamed up with Graham Smith (his first competition for the club in nearly 2 years due to injury as well as university study) to win the javelin ‘a’ & ‘b’ with throws of 52.66 & 45.46, action man Craig went
straight to the shot to record more pts for the team along with young Denis Hasanaj who kept complaining how heavy it was – he was 2nd with 8.83 ‘b’ while Craig was 4th with 11.78 ‘a’ – The woman javelin saw the returning and only half fit Carol Stone throw 30.63m and Holly Ware 22.93m both were 2nd their respective group.
Cloe Garrett having already equally her pb in the PV set a new pb in the high jump as he came 4th with 1.50m With the women only managing to cover 2 of the 8 events from 400 to 3000k it was left in the hands of the men to make up and maintain our challenge for glory.
Caroline Ford ran a gutsy 400m (61.2) to finish 5 and Charlotte Daniel recorded 2:36.9 to finish 3rd in the 800m. Donomar Smith and Arthur Tanoh made it a double first in the 400m 54.7 & 52.9, Sam Murphy & Robert Macdonld both came second in their race with times of 1:59.4 and 2:06.3 (pb for Robert). The 1500m saw victory for Andrew Sheridan 4:09.0 and Robert Macdonald was 2nd in ‘b’ race 4:33.3 – in the 3000m Alasdair Macdonald was 2nd 9:49.3 while Joseph Simmons opted to do the ‘b’ race which he won knowing that he had a 2K steeplechase coming later.
The sprint hurdles saw another double first as Gariella and Nike Odewunmi won the races in 16.3 & 18.3 while Charlie Perry & Tobi Odunsanya both came 3rd in their races.
With two third of the programme gone no news was forthcoming of how the match was going due to the fact that the operators were having trouble with the new technology, belated some points were announced to show that we
were in the lead with a backlog of results to be added.
Unperturbed by this the team continued to dominate the top positions, a very closely contested 200m saw David Bolarinwa shaded the race in 22.7 while Ben Reid grabbed a pb for his ‘b’ race 24.2, Hatshepsur James had a fine run in her 200m where she came 3rd 27.1 and Maleka Allen showed great form as she recorded 27.1 to come 2nd ‘b’
Despite feeling a little fatigue Craig Lacy went out to do a job in the discus and credit to him recoded a new pb of 35.93 to finish 3rd, Alasdair Macdonald also got a new pb as he won the ‘b’ with 29.95.
Charlotte Lucas shows her liking for the triple jump as she came 4th with 10.25m with Nike Odewunmi gaining 2nd for the ‘b’ with 9.33m. Surely it much be a victory for the light blues with only the relays and steeple to come but still no announcement was forthcoming ah well back to what we were doing.
The women sprint relay was a real tight affair at the end but victory was gained as Hatshepur kept paced with Croydon on leg 1, Gabriella blistering run down the back straight and the changeover to Cloe was textbook stuff and with a five metre lead at the start of the last changeover, Maleka held on to victory by the narrowest of margin – both team recorded 49.9 - The men was more clear cut as Arthur, Tobi, Tolu and David made light work of the opposition but some baton practice looks on the card.
The steeplechase was a romp in the park for Sam Murphy as he won by 20 second (6:28.5) taking 5 second of his pb – Joe Simmons after his 3000k still decided that he wanted to complete the course and gained 7pts for his effort.
Only the 4x4 was left - and as we didn’t put out a team in the previous match we made amend – the women team was made up of u17 – Caroline Ford, Charlotte Daniel, Cloe Garrett & Maleka Allen –they finished 3rd while the mens team of Donomar Smith, Andrew Sheridan, Charlie Perry & Nigel Munjoma came second despite having a 25metre start at the last change.
No results were going to be forthcoming for quite sometimes so we all left without knowing the final results – history made and we didn’t know for certain. A provision results from the organiser was sent to me 10.30 Sunday evening
with the following details: Match scores – Cambridge (504.5) Tonbridge (147), Medway & M (441), Ashford (401), Croydon (295), IEK/PaddockW (270.5), Dartford (215)
All we need is official confirmation and Cambridge Harriers would have won their first match since the introduction of joint scoring in 2006.
