National Junior League 24/05/09
Cambridge Harriers junior athletes suffered another defeat by Tonbridge (1st), Medway & Maidstone (2nd).

The juniors will always struggle purely because of the inability to field anywhere near a full strength team for these meetings for one reason or another.

An analysis of the results shows that the events that our athletes took part in – Medway won 22, Cambridge won 13, and Tonbridge only 9, yet Tonbridge won the match by 38pts and we were 100pts behind them.

Pick of our athletes on the day was Craig Lacy (Man of the Match) with a javelin throw of 58.60, Alasdair MacDonald made this a double first by winning the ‘b’ string with 41.76 – Stefan Mitchell won a very tight 100m in 11.5 but stormed to victory in the 200 (22.9) easing down with 50 to go – Sam Murphy won a very tactical 800m and only took the lead with 80m to go as he recorded a useful 2:00.6 - valuable points were garnered by Charlie Perry (25) in both hurdles races + relay, Denis Hasanaj (19) in shot, hammer and triple jump.

The woman fare better in the winning stake as they recorded 8 victories, the best graded Harriers performance of the day came from Charlotte Lucas in the triple jump (10.54) but she only came 3rd with the winner recording 10.89, however she won ‘b’ hammer (17.55).

Holly Ware was the pick of the junior women as she won the hammer in a new pb (31.75), a rare victory in 400h ‘b’ – time irrelevant as well as technique, 2nd in the ‘b’ javelin (25.09) 3rd in the shot a total of 43 pts was gained alone.

Hatshepsur James also had a very eventful day as she arrived just in time for her race and without any warm up proceeded to win her ‘b’ string 100(13.0) she went on to win ‘b’ 100h (18.4), 3rd 200 (27.1) and was part of the relay runner’s up team.

Other notable victories were gained by Melissa Owusu-Ansah ‘b’ 200 (26.5), Nikki Odewunmi 100h (18.1) & ‘b’ triple jump (9.82)

Match scores – Tonbridge (518), Medway & M (482), Cambridge (423), Ashford (382), Invicta EK & Paddock W (188), Croydon (147), Bexley (89).
Next National Junior Match – Ashford 14 June – Hopefully with a full strength team

Gaby o

Gaby Ade Onojobi - one of many young Cambridge Harriers stars.

SEAA U15/U17 Track & Field Champs, Ashford 24-25/05/09
The club’s young athletes got back on track at the weekend with a series of great performances at the South of England championships writes Mick Bond.

Held at a sunny Ashford, David Bolarinwa and Gaby Ade Onojobi were again the stars of the day. David recovered from three under par starts to win each round of the Under 17 100m including the final where he just piped rival Jordan Arthur from Enfield and Haringey by just 3/100th of a second to take the gold in 11.09.

Gaby couldn’t quite emulate David’s feat in the 300 hurdles but got very close and also broke the club record again with a scintillating time of 44.35 for the silver medal. Later in the day she also ran the 80m Hurdles and got closer to the 12 second barrier with a time of 12.05 for 6th place

Joe Berth Jones gave the club a full set of medals by taking third place in the under 15 boys 100m whilst Nigel Munjoma set a series of pb’s in the Under 17 Long jump culminating with a massive 6.48 to take fourth place and to edge nearer to the club record of 6.60 set 34 years ago by Paul Malyon, an excellent achievement for his first track and field season. Nigel also competed in the high jump but was disappointed with his jump of 1.70.

Other competitors:
Sophie Parkes Under 15 800 5th in Heat 2.27.68
Kassia Soardes Under 15 800 7th in Heat 2.48.6

SCVAC 18/05/09
With a small but regular and committed elite team Cambridge Harriers women are back on top.

Joanne Murphy and Chris Bond shared out the W35's team on the track but were helped out on the field with Sigi dropping down an age group to take first place in the Hammer.

Maria McDonald and Roz took on the W50's team with Marlow Hadler dropping an age group to assist on the field.

Caroline Hall held together the W60's on her own.

A good performance, made all the better with the view of Canterbury Cathedral in the distance, this track get's the `best view' award (which got taken in 7 times whilst running the 3000m!)

The men came third again, only providing one winner this time, Ray Daniel in the M50 400m in a time that would have won the M35 races, 59.4 seconds.

Constant Serugo scored well with two second places in the M35 400m and triple jump. There were also second place performances from Tony Tipping in the M35 hammer and Jerry Carnell in the M50 3000m.
