Phoenix 10k

Wednesday 20th July

On wet Wednesday evening Dean Lacy travelled to Hove for the Inaugural Phoenix 10K.
By the time the gun went the rain had stopped and the flat straight out and back course looked set to give athletes the opportunity to run some quick times. By the first 1km Dean had taken up the lead and was only followed by 2 athletes from the host club Phoenix (Ian Leitch & Josh Guilmant) The group of three were still together at halfway but just after the turn point Dean put in a surge that Guilmant couldn‘t go quite go with and he just had Leitch for company. Dean continued to put in surges to shake his rival for the rest of the race but to no avail and with 400m to go Leitch kicked for home but the gap was only a few metres. With 60m left Dean kicked past his rival to take the win with a new lifetime best of 30:22. “I kept trying to get rid of him but he was really strong” Dean explains. “I felt strong throughout but just couldn’t maintain the pace needed to drop him. I’m really pleased with the victory and the pb and hopefully I’ll get close to a sub 30 by the end of the season”

England Athletics Championships

Saturday 16th July

Craig Lacy went into these senior championships full of confidence after a recent run of pbs that have seen him move up to 5th in the U23 UK rankings and 15th in the seniors. In his last competition Craig had his best series of throws ever with all 6 of them over 60m and 4 of them over his old pb. Craig felt that his 67.01 might just be good enough for a medal on saturday and it nearly was! Going into the final round Craig was lying 3rd after another fantastic pb of 68.46! But eventually had to settle for 4th after a pb from another athlete. Craig has now been invited to UK Championship and World Trials in Birmingham at the end of the month. We wish hime the best of luck .

Aviva SIAB U17 Schools International

Saturday 16th July

Daryll Neita competed for the England Schools Team in the Aviva SIAB Schools U17 track and field international at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium. The event brings together the top 300 under 17 (years 10 & 11) athletes from the schools associations of England, All-Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The teams arriving at the stadium at 9 am must have thought that they were in for a rain-affected competition, but conditions improved as the day wore on though the wind – gusting up to 9 metres per second in one field event – made things difficult for athletes in some events. Competing in the 100m Daryll finished 2nd in 11.97 just outside her personal best. Helping England to win the girls competition and the overall competition.

Morph Mania At Brighton Park Run

Saturday 16th June

Morphs

On Saturday 16 June on a wet and miserable morning, 20 morphs descended upon the Brighton park run feeling slightly worse for wear after a late night on the tiles. The occasion was Cambridge Harriers member Rob Shearer's stag trip and what had sounded like a good idea in February seemed much less so as the alarm went off at 8am and rain was lashing the windows!

Somehow 6 taxis were gathered together and the last morphs made it to the start line with seconds to spare. The gun went and the morphs were off on one small lap and two big laps of Hove Park. After taking a while to settle down Rob's brother Ben hit the front at about the 1.5km point and managed to stay there, running 16.30 to win. The race was a great success for Team Morph with 4 finishers in the top 10 out of a field of 280, with the following times:

Ben Shearer 16.30
Nick Morgan 17.39
Rob Shearer 19.24
Mitch Dann 19.24

Others including the non runners also clocked impressive times with two more under 21 mins and six more under 25 mins. Times were some way down on respective PBs but not too bad given the sleep deprivation, weather and attire! After the race Team Morph retired to the community cafe for a well earned hot drink and a chat with the extremely friendly regular local runners.

Another Club Record For Heather

Heather 09.07.11

Heather Butcher set a new U15 Girls club record for 2000 metres walk of 9:48.7 in Shrewsbury. Heather tells us more "I have been working on pacing with Noel and this time I got it right. The walkers in front off me went of 10 seconds faster for the first lap but I'd caught them up by half way. Getting the pacing right means I'm less tired which helps with technique and times. I had hoped to go sub 10mins and was really pleased. It also makes me more confident that I can achieve sub 15mins for 3k, which is my target for this year"

Dean Lacy, Ben Louch and Ben Shearer, running his first Assembly League, took the first three individual placesin the fourth race of the series.
