Successful Weekend for Harriers
5 May 2008
There was much success over a busy bank holiday weekend of athletics.
The Vets continued their SCVAC League season at Deangate on Friday, while, the Senior Men kicked off their Division One season in the Mens Southern League with a fantastic win at Sutcliffe Park on Saturday. The following day, club records were broken at the UK Young Athletes League as Cambridge Harriers achieved a lndslide victory, while road runners gained wins and PB's at the Ted Pepper 10 on Monday.
We start our reports in chronological order, with news from the Assembly League at Greenwich.
Assembly League
A relatively small group of club runners participated in the second Assembly League race on the flat and fast 5km route close to the Greenwich O2 Dome. Fresh from her London Marathon, Clare Gibson was the first club runner to cross the line, taking the overall second senior women’s place. Amazingly, over 300 runners started the race causing severe pressure on the timekeepers with the last third of the race being awarded estimated times only.
SCVAC League
The club’s older athletes were in action on Friday night at Deangate. Despite injuries to some key members the team still came out on top and now lead the table after two fixtures. Clare Elms easily won the 3,000m but had a harder race over 400 where she was up against some of the country’s top 400m specialist she, despite this she ran a brave race and come in 3rd with a time of 63.9. Marathon runner Roz Tabor took 2nd in the B string 400 for over 35’s despite now being over 55 and having to fill in at last minutes for an injured athlete! Her time of 77.3 will put her well up in her age group.
Sigi Roberts took first place in the over 35’s hammer with a throw of 27.13.
Having not ran on the track since her youth, new comer to the W60’s team Pam McShee ran a sensible race to finish 3rd.
The Men's team gained fourth position in the match at Deangate. Steve Smythe acheived the nights only victory for Cambridge Harriers men, winning the 3000m in 10:24.2. Anthony Tipping gained 3rd place in the M35 High Jump with a hight of 1.45 meters. He also gained second place in the hammer with a throw of 36.93.
Southern Mens League
Cambridge Harriers twice promoted Senior Men's team started this year’s campaign to join to join the athletic elite, by beating last years unbeaten champions Exeter, at Eltham, on Saturday. Yet, with the additional presence of a strong Portsmouth team, this win was hard earned, rather than the result of any dominance, as Cambridge maintained a very slender lead until the later stages.
There was little doubt about who was the star of the show, as Francois Potgieter won both the 110 and 400 hurdle events, along with the high jump and pole vault. To this he then added a fine long jump of 6.54, which, on this occasion, only merited third place in the quality field that was present.
The Harriers only other A string wins were to come from Dean Lacy in the 1500 metres (4.01.5) and Prince Ezenwa in the triple jump, where a fine jump of 14.63 took the spoils. Both athletes added further points though with Lacy third in the 800 metres, whilst Ezenwa won the long jump B string.
Other B string victories came on the track from Lee Coogan (800), Dave Reader (1500), Matt Winn-Smith (5000) and from Liam Corcoran in the steeplechase. It was in the latter event though that the debut of the day occurred as youngster Sam Murphy just failed to catch the winner, with a time of 10.32.7.
It was in the field that another U/17 also stood out as Kevin Kwarteng got B string wins in the high jump and triple jump, whilst in the throws there were victories for veterans Tony Tipping (discus) and Chris Melluish (hammer).
As the day drew to a close Cambridge nudged further ahead in, what on paper looked to be, one of their most difficult matches of the season. A number of athletes congregated at the end to hear confirmation of the result, after what had been tough afternoon. It promises to be another year pushing for success for this Bexley based club.
National Young Athletes League
Cambridge Harriers Young Athletes team scored a landslide victory in their first fixture in the National Young Athletes League. The 50 strong squad trounced teams from Medway and Maidstone, Ealing and Ashford running up 428 points compared to the next best of 331. The fixture marked the start of the club’s campaign to return to the premier league from which they were relegated last year
The team covered virtually all of the 146 events racking up the points wherever possible. There was quality as well as quantity however and none more so from David Bolarinwa who ran 11.4 to win the under 15 boys 100m and break Mick Bond’s 32 year old club record. David then combined with Joe Berth Jones, Samy Latif and Tolu Odusanya to equal the club’s 4x100m record of 46.9. In a great day for the club however this wasn’t the only record to be equalled. Daryl Nieta also equalled the under 13 girls 75m record with a time of 10.2 and then narrowly missed the Long Jump record leaping 4.80meters compared to Karen Mylan’s mark of 4.83 set in 1998. .There was one other record set in the Pole Vault where Charlotte Lucas showed the benefit of some training sessions with Allan Williams at Lee Valley to set an inaugural club Pole Vault record for Under 17 girls of 2.00 metres
Under 17 girls
Jess Clarke got the club off to a great start in the first track event of the day winning the 300m hurdles in style in 48.2 with Charlotte Lucas taking the B race with a PB of 52.7. This was just two of 17 wins out of 34 possible in this age group. Anesa Wanogho won both the Shot and Discus whilst Holly Ware won the hammer and b string High Jump. Jess Clark also won the 80m Hurdles in a personal best of 12.5 whilst Hatshepsut James took double seconds in the 100 and 200m
Under 15 Girls
Sally Duggan threw nearly twice as far as the other competitors to win the Javelin with a personal best of 33.87, a grade one performance. Ruth Onyekwe won the Long Jump with a leap of 4.56 whilst Emily Nolan ran a fine 800 to record a season’s best of 2.27.9 In the 1500 both Kassia Soards and Megan Williams ran well to run PB’s of 5.39.2 and 5.43.7 respectively
Under 13 Girls
As mentioned earlier Daryl Nieta was the star of the show but there were many other fine performances. Kate Curran won the 1200m in style whilst team mate Iona Williams took the B string race. Georgina Renney and Megan Collett both ran fast races against strong opposition to take 3rd and 1st in the 800 A and B string whilst Louise Coulter and Laura Deacon both hurdled well to take second and first in the 70 m Hurdles
Under 17 boys
Ashley George won the High Jump in a personal best of 1.70 whilst Charlie Roseman took the B event in 1.60m. Omari Markland Montgomery won both the B string 100 and 200. Alasdair MacDonald won the 3o00m whilst Joe Simmons won an exciting Steeplechase not long after winning the b string 1500m
Under 15 boys
Donomar Smith showed his undoubted talent with a 10 second improvement on his pb in the 800. His time of 2.09.0 got him second in the A string whilst Charlie Perry also ran strongly to take the b string in 2.17.2. Samy Latif and James Stockman won the A and B string high jumps
Under 13 boys
Charlie Murphy and Oliver Northcott-Barlow combined to win the A and B string Shot putt. Joseph Epps got pb’s in both the high Jump (1.25m) and the 800m (2.43.5). Other pb’s were set by Tayo Ayeni in the Hurdles and 100m and Ryan George in the 200 and long Jump. Will Smith ran a fine 1500 in his debut at the event to record a time of 5.17.2.
There was fine team sprit throughout the afternoon and the team now moves on to the second fixture in the five match series at lee valley on May 18th. The opposition at the next match will be Eastbourne, Herts Phoenix and Lewes
Ted Pepper 10k
A humid and sunny bank holiday morning, saw Claire Gibson continue to run well after the London Marathon to triumph as the fist woman home in a time of 37:52.
This race incorporated the SCVAC 10k championships, where Mark Cross won the M45 with a time of 37:12, while Paul Kent was second M45 in 38:41.
The second Cambridge Harrier to finish was young Liam Corcoran in 38:10.
Graham Maynard also finished in 39:08. Gerard McCann came in just under the 40 minute mark in 39:30 follwed by Nick Jellama, running after a break due to work and football committments in 39:43 while Alex Hall wasn't far off of his PB with a time of 40:27.
Ashley Blackmore's hard work at the track paid dividends, as he achieved an excellent performance to take two minutes off of his finishing time to come home in 43:29. Just ahead of Ashley, Kevin White proved that he has recovered from his broken metatarsals by sprinting to the finish in 43:20.
Cambridge Harriers only other lady in the Ted Pepper 10k was Kate Aldridge, who completed the relatively flat three laps in 45:10, while John Corcoran hot footed from helping with the National Young Athletes League victory at the weekend to finish in 51:42.
Whitstable 10k
Last but not least, Martin Hawkins competed in the Whitstable 10k. The man who never seems to rest completed the windy coastal course in 37:58 to gain 29th position in the 582 strong field.
